What you'll need
Parent and baby in comfortable feeding position — baby in arms or lap. Bottle prepared and at appropriate temperature. Environment should be calm and quiet. Best done when both parent and baby are relaxed.
How it works
- 1~40s
As your child begins to feed, start telling them the story of when you first met — maybe in the delivery room or the first time you held them. Speak softly and lovingly. Watch your child's face closely as you talk. Does they maintain eye contact? Does their expression soften or change as you share this emotional story? Tell me what you notice in their eyes and face.
Watch for: Baby shows emotional connection during intimate storytelling — softening expression, maintaining gaze, showing signs of comfort and security.
- 2~35s
Now, as you continue the story, try adding gentle touch. If your child seems receptive, softly stroke their back, hand, or foot while you speak. Notice how your child responds to this combination of your voice, eye contact, and touch. Does they relax more deeply? Does they reach for your hand or adjust their position? Some babies might even pause feeding briefly to engage more fully.
Watch for: Baby sustains social engagement through multiple channels — maintaining eye contact while also responding to touch during feeding.
- 3~30s
As your child finishes feeding or takes a break, respond to any sounds they makes. If your child babbles, coos, or makes any vocalization, treat it as their part of the conversation. Echo the sound back and add a loving comment: 'Yes, that's right! That was such a special day.' Watch if your child makes more sounds in response. Does this feel like a real back-and-forth exchange?
Watch for: Baby vocalizes in response to parent's storytelling and engages in conversational turn-taking.
