Mirror Self-Discovery
Parent sits baby in front of a mirror while gently brushing hair, pointing out facial features and observing baby's reactions to the reflection. The agent coaches the parent to notice mirror engagement, name recognition, and early self-awareness as baby begins to perceive themselves as a whole person.

What you'll need
Baby seated securely facing a mirror (on parent's lap or propped with support). Have a gentle baby hairbrush ready. Ensure mirror is safe and positioned so baby can see reflection clearly. Baby should be alert and calm.
How it works
- 1~30s
Start by gently brushing your child's hair while they looks in the mirror. Watch their face closely — does your child seem to notice the reflection? You might see them staring intently, smiling, or reaching toward the mirror. Some babies even make sounds to 'talk' to their reflection. Tell me what you notice about your child's reaction to seeing themself.
Watch for: Baby shows a positive or curious reaction when seeing themselves in a mirror — smiling, reaching, vocalizing, or staring intently.
- 2~35s
Now let's incorporate your child's name. While they is looking in the mirror, say 'your child, look! There's your child!' in an excited, warm voice. Then try saying your child's name from slightly behind or beside them — does they turn toward your voice? Watch to see if your child moves their body, crawls, or turns their head when they hears their name. Tell me what you observe.
Watch for: Baby turns or moves toward parent when hearing their name, showing recognition and social connection.
- 3~40s
Now let's help your child connect the reflection to their body. Gently touch your child's nose in the mirror and say 'There's your nose!' Then touch their actual nose and say 'This is your nose too!' See if your child touches their own nose or the mirror image. You can try with ears, cheeks, or hair. Does your child seem to understand the connection between the reflection and their body?
Watch for: Baby shows emerging understanding that the mirror reflection represents their own body — may touch own body part after seeing it touched in mirror.
