Shopping and Strolling

Parent involves toddler in preparing the stroller for a pretend shopping trip, observing how the child participates in a familiar routine. The agent coaches the parent to notice cooperative behavior, following simple instructions, and showing interest in everyday activities — building practical life skills and social engagement.

What you'll need

Toddler in a safe play area. Have a stroller, push toy, or substitute (like a chair or box) available. Best done when child is alert and not hungry or tired. No other materials needed.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start by getting the stroller ready. Say to your child, 'Let's get ready to go shopping! Can you help me?' Then pat the seat of the stroller and say, 'We need to make it nice for you. Can you touch the seat?' Watch how your child responds. Does they come over to the stroller? Does they touch it or show interest in what you're doing?

Watch for: Toddler shows interest in a familiar everyday activity or object when invited by parent.

  2. 2~35s

Now give your child a simple instruction related to the stroller. You could say, 'Can you put your teddy in the seat?' or 'Let's buckle the straps — can you hold this?' Use one clear, simple direction. Watch to see if your child attempts to follow your instruction. Does they try to put something in the seat? Does they hold a strap or imitate your action?

Watch for: Toddler attempts to follow a simple one-step instruction related to a familiar activity.

  3. 3~40s

Now let's complete the routine together. Say, 'All ready! Let's go shopping!' and start pushing the stroller slowly. Invite your child to walk beside you or pretend to push. Watch how your child participates in this joint activity. Does they stay engaged? Does they walk alongside, pretend to push, or show enjoyment in the shared pretend play?

Watch for: Toddler cooperates in a simple shared routine or activity with parent.
