What you'll need

Baby in comfortable position, not directly facing parent. Quiet environment with minimal background noise. No toys in baby's hands for the first trial.

How it works

  1. 1~10s

When your child is looking away from you, say their name in a normal, cheerful voice. Not too loud, not a whisper — just how you'd normally say it. Say it once and wait. Does your child turn toward you?

    Watch for: turns_to_own_name

  2. 2~10s

Now try from a little further away — maybe stand across the room. Say your child's name once in a normal voice. Does they look for you? Turn toward the sound?

    Watch for: responds_to_name_from_distance

  3. 3~15s

Here's a fun test — say a different word in the same cheerful voice. Maybe another name or a random word like 'banana.' Then, after a pause, say your child's actual name. Does your child respond differently to their own name versus the other word?

    Watch for: responds_specifically_to_own_name

  4. 4

Last one — when your child does respond to their name, tell me more about how they responds. Just a head turn? A smile? A squeal? Does your child make sounds back at you?

    Watch for: quality_of_name_response
