What you'll need

Toddler in a safe, familiar room with a comfort object available. Another caregiver nearby is ideal but not required. Keep the atmosphere light and playful.

How it works

  1. 1~20s

Start with classic peek-a-boo — cover your face with your hands, then reveal yourself with a big 'Peek-a-boo!' Do this a few times. How does your child react? Is they delighted? Anxious when your face disappears? Tell me the emotional journey.

  2. 2~30s

Now wave and say 'Bye-bye, your child! I'll be right back!' and step out of the room for about 15 seconds. Then come back with a cheerful 'I'm back!' Tell me: What did your child do when you left? And when you came back?

  3. 3

When your child was upset — or even a little unsettled — how did they cope? Did your child go to a comfort object? Suck thumb? Look around? Cry immediately? The way your child handles the stress tells us about emotional regulation.

  4. 4

Quick side observation — during the separation, did your child look toward the door where you left, as if expecting you to come back from that spot? That tells us about understanding that you still exist when out of sight.
