What you'll need

Baby in highchair. 4-6 small, safe finger food pieces on tray. Parent observing closely for safety. Bib recommended. Messy floor expected!

How it works

  1. 1~25s

Watch how your child goes after the food. Does they reach right away? How does they pick up the pieces — raking them with the whole hand or using fingers? Can they get a piece into their grip? you, tell me about your child's approach to the food.

Watch for: Baby demonstrates grasp skill when picking up small food pieces — from raking to pincer grasp.

  2. 2~30s

Now watch the whole journey — from tray to mouth. How successfully does your child get the food from their hand into their mouth? Does the food make it? Does it end up on their cheek, lap, or floor? How many pieces out of five actually make it to the mouth?

Watch for: Baby successfully coordinates hand-to-mouth movement to self-feed with finger foods.

  3. 3~25s

Last observation — watch for signs of independence and decision-making. Does your child choose which piece to pick up? Does they show preference for certain foods? Does they push away food they doesn't want? These choices show practical independence developing.

Watch for: Baby shows independent decision-making during feeding — choosing foods, showing preferences, refusing items.
