Routine Reader

Parent observes whether baby shows anticipation during familiar routine steps — bath time, feeding, nappy change. The agent coaches the parent to narrate each step and watch for signs that baby predicts what comes next, building early practical life understanding through routine awareness.

What you'll need

Parent should be about to start a familiar daily routine (bath, feed, or nappy change). No special materials needed beyond what the routine requires.

How it works

  1. 1~20s

As you begin the routine, narrate what you're doing: 'It's bath time!' or 'Time for your milk!' Before you actually start the action, pause for a moment after your announcement. you, watch your child's body and face — does they get excited? Kick legs? Open mouth? Turn toward the bath or bottle? Any sign that they knows what's coming?

Watch for: Baby shows anticipatory behaviour when a familiar routine is announced or initiated.

  2. 2~25s

Now, as you go through the routine, narrate each step before you do it: 'Now I'm going to wash your tummy' or 'Here comes the nappy.' Pause briefly between narrating and doing. you, does your child react to your narration? Does they seem to prepare for the next step — moving a body part, looking at what you're reaching for, or getting still?

Watch for: Baby shows awareness of routine sequence by responding to step narration before the action occurs.

  3. 3~25s

For the last part, watch for any signs of cooperation during the routine. Does your child help in any tiny way — holding still while you dress them, opening their mouth for the spoon, lifting their arms? Even passive cooperation (not resisting) counts. These small cooperative moments show your child is becoming an active participant in their own care.

Watch for: Baby shows cooperative behaviour during routine care, indicating practical engagement.
