What you'll need
Simple recipe with 3-4 steps. All ingredients and tools ready. Child on step stool if needed. Hands washed. Safe items only — no sharp knives or hot surfaces for child.
How it works
- 1~25s
Start with a measuring or pouring step. Have your child pour an ingredient into a bowl or measure with a cup. Say 'We need one cup of flour — can you scoop it?' Does your child understand 'one cup'? Can they pour without too much spilling?
Watch for: Child pours or measures an ingredient with some understanding of quantity.
- 2~25s
Now a mixing step — stirring, mashing, or kneading. Give your child a spoon and say 'Stir it all together!' or 'Can you mash the banana?' Does your child use the tool effectively? Can they sustain the mixing until it's done?
Watch for: Child uses a kitchen tool (spoon, masher, spreader) with functional competence.
- 3~20s
When the food is ready, present it to the family. Say 'your child made this!' Watch your child's reaction. Does they seem proud? Want to eat what they made? Show others? The pride of creating something real and useful is a powerful motivator for practical independence.
Watch for: Child shows pride in the food they helped create.
