Helper of the Day — I Can Do It Myself!
Child takes on a real household task independently: setting the table, sorting laundry by colour, or watering plants. The agent guides the parent to observe task completion, multi-step instruction following, and sense of responsibility. Builds practical life skills, executive function, and the confidence that comes from contributing meaningfully to the household.

What you'll need
Choose one task: (A) Setting the table — have plates, cups, utensils, and napkins accessible at child height. (B) Laundry sorting — have a mixed basket of lights and darks ready, with two empty containers to sort into. (C) Plant watering — have a small watering can filled and plants identified. Whichever task, ensure materials are safe and accessible without climbing.
How it works
- 1~40s
Great choice! Now here's the important part: give your child the instructions as a set — not one at a time. For table setting, say something like: 'We need a plate, a fork, a knife, a cup, and a napkin for each person. There are four people eating tonight. Can you set the whole table?' For laundry: 'Sort all the clothes into two piles — light colours in this basket and dark colours in that basket.' For watering: 'Each plant needs a drink — fill the watering can, water each plant until the soil looks dark, then move to the next one.' Give the instructions, then step back. Watch: does your child remember the steps, or need them repeated? Does they get started right away or look lost? Tell me how the beginning goes!
Watch for: Child's ability to remember and follow a multi-step instruction set without needing each step repeated individually
- 2~45s
Now your child is working through the task. you, I want you to resist helping unless they asks or there's a safety issue. Watch the process: is your child careful and methodical, or rushing and sloppy? Does they check their own work? For table setting — are the items placed neatly or scattered randomly? For laundry — is they thinking about each item or just tossing? For watering — does they give each plant attention or dump and run? Tell me about the quality of the work and your child's attitude while doing it!
Watch for: Child's ability to complete a practical household task from start to finish with reasonable quality
- 3~30s
The task should be done or nearly done now. Time for the reflection! Ask your child three things: 'How do you think you did?' 'Was any part tricky?' And the big one: 'How does it feel to have done a real job that helps the family?' you, that last question is about responsibility and contribution — children at this age are building their sense of themselves as capable people who matter. Also ask: 'Would you do this job again tomorrow?' Tell me your child's answers and what you noticed about their sense of pride or accomplishment!
Watch for: Child's sense of responsibility, pride in contribution, and willingness to take on practical tasks
