What you'll need
Simple outfit laid out: T-shirt, trousers/leggings, socks. Easy-to-manage items (no buttons or zips for beginners). Child in underwear/nappy ready to dress.
How it works
- 1~40s
Hand your child the T-shirt and say 'Can you put it on?' Don't help right away — let them try. Watch what they does. Does they find the head hole? Pull it over? Get arms through? Where does they get stuck?
Watch for: Child attempts to put on a T-shirt independently.
- 2~40s
Now trousers and socks. These are different challenges — trousers need balance (standing on one leg) and socks need fine motor pulling. Let your child try each one. Where does they succeed and where does they need help?
Watch for: Child manages lower body dressing items, showing fine motor and balance skills.
- 3~20s
Now that your child is dressed, ask: 'What did you put on first? What was next?' Can they remember the sequence? Also — look at your child's face. Does they seem proud? Pleased? Rush to look in a mirror? That sense of accomplishment builds independence motivation.
Watch for: Child shows awareness of dressing sequence and pride in independent accomplishment.
