What you'll need

Toddler in highchair or at low table. 5-6 small safe objects (cereal pieces, puffs, raisins) spread on a plate or clean tray surface.

How it works

  1. 1~15s

Great! Now just point to one of the little pieces and say 'Can you get that one?' Watch how your child picks it up — does they use the whole hand to scoop, or try to pinch it with fingers? Tell me what you see.

  2. 2~25s

Now let your child pick up a few more. As you watch, notice — is they using the same hand each time, or switching? And does your child look at the piece before reaching, or just go for it?

  3. 3~20s

Here's a fun twist — can you hold out your hand and ask your child to put a piece in your palm? This is actually tricky because it requires picking up AND letting go on purpose. What happens?

  4. 4

Last question — throughout this little game, how was your child's focus? Was they concentrated and into it, or easily distracted? And did your child say anything — even just 'mmm' or 'more' or pointing?
