Target Toss Challenge — Aim, Throw, Adjust

Child throws soft objects (bean bags, rolled socks, soft balls) at targets from increasing distances. The agent guides the parent to observe hand-eye coordination, force control, throwing accuracy, and how the child adjusts strategy between throws. Builds persistence and self-regulation alongside motor skill.

What you'll need

Parent gathers 5-6 soft throwable objects (rolled socks, bean bags, small soft balls, stuffed animals). Set up a target (bucket, laundry basket, cardboard box, tape circle on floor). Mark a throwing line about 5-6 feet away with tape or a stick. Can be indoors or outdoors.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's start at the close line — about five big steps away. Give your child three throws at the target. Before they starts, watch the throwing motion: is your child using the whole arm, or just the wrist? Does they step forward with the opposite foot? And most importantly, how close do the throws land to the target? Tell me about all three throws!

Watch for: Child's overhand throwing mechanics — arm motion, trunk rotation, weight transfer, and opposite-foot step

  2. 2~30s

Time to back up! Have your child take three more big steps back from the throwing line. That should be about eight to ten feet from the target now. Give them three more throws. This time, I'm really curious about force control — does your child throw too hard and overshoot, or too soft and come up short? And does they adjust the strength between throws?

Watch for: Child's ability to calibrate throwing force to match the distance — not too hard, not too soft

  3. 3~45s

Final distance challenge! Have your child back up another three big steps — this should be really stretching it. Give them five throws this time since it's the hardest distance. I'm watching for two things now: does your child keep trying even when it's really hard, and does they get better over the five throws? Persistence and improvement are what I'm listening for. Tell me the full story!

Watch for: Throwing accuracy at far range (12-15 feet) — how many of 5 throws hit or land near the target, and is there improvement across attempts

  4. 4~45s

Let's end with a game! Set up three targets at different distances — close, medium, and far. Each one is worth more points: close is 1 point, medium is 3 points, and far is 5 points. Give your child six throws and let them choose which target to aim for each time. This tells us so much — does they play it safe for guaranteed points, go for the big score, or mix it up? Keep score out loud and tell me your child's final score and strategy!

Watch for: Child's target selection strategy — risk-reward decision-making across throws
