Graspy Grab — Reaching for Fun Things

What you'll need

Parent needs one colorful, graspable toy and a comfortable place with baby supported in seated or reclined position.

How it works

  1. 1~15s

Great! Now hold the toy about six inches in front of your child's chest — close enough that they can see it clearly. Give it a little wiggle to catch their eye. What does your child do when they notices it?

  2. 2~20s

Now keep the toy nice and steady. Does your child reach out toward it — even a little arm movement counts! Tell me what you see those little arms doing.

  3. 3~20s

Awesome! Now if your child's hand gets to the toy, let them try to grab on. Does your child close their fingers around it? Tell me about how that grip looks — is it a whole-hand squeeze or more of a finger poke?

  4. 4~20s

Let's give your child one more chance with the toy. If they dropped it, hold it out again. This time, try offering it slightly to one side — does your child reach across the body or just with the closer hand?

    Watch for: reaches_across_midline

  5. 5

One last thing — throughout this little game, how was your child's mood? Happy and babbling? Calm and focused? Fussy at all? There's no wrong answer — it all tells us something helpful.
