What you'll need

A few objects within reach for the instruction test. A picture book handy for the story turn.

How it works

  1. 1~90s

Give your child a two-part verbal instruction — no gestures, just words. Try: 'Go and get your shoe, and then bring it to me.' Then: 'Put the cup on the table and then sit down.' Then: 'Get the book and bring it to me and then put it down.' Try 3 different two-part instructions. Does your child do both steps? Does they do the first and forget the second? Tell me what happens.

Watch for: Child follows two-part verbal instructions

  2. 2~120s

Now a short story. Read your child 4-6 pages from a picture book — or tell a simple story out loud without a book. Watch how your child responds: Does they stay focused and listen? Does they look at the pictures? Ask questions or comment? Or does they wander off immediately? Note how long your child stays engaged and what they does. Tell me.

Watch for: Child listens to a story with interest
