Tummy Time and Moving

Parent places child on the floor and observes early floor mobility milestones — rolling, prone lifting, sitting balance, and crawling. Covers six foundational motor milestones at 12-17mo. Three phases: back-to-tummy roll, prone prop-up, and sitting while playing.

What you'll need

Firm, flat floor (not a soft mattress). Child in light clothing. Place a small interesting toy just out of reach to motivate movement. Stay close for safety.

How it works

  1. 1~40s

Lay your child on their back. Put a toy to the side so they has to roll to reach it. Does your child roll from back to tummy? Use arms? Does they do it intentionally, or accidentally? Tell me what you see. Also — when lying on their back, does your child lift their head and chest off the floor?

Watch for: Child rolls from back to tummy

  2. 2~30s

Now place your child on their tummy. Hold a toy just above their eye level. Does your child prop up on their hands or forearms to lift their head and chest and look at it? How high does the chest lift — just the head, or the whole chest? Tell me.

Watch for: Child lifts head and chest in prone position

  3. 3~40s

Now check sitting and crawling. Can your child sit independently and play without falling — for at least 10 seconds — without needing to prop on hands? Then: does your child crawl, creep, roll, or scoot to reach something across the floor? Describe both. Tell me.

Watch for: Child sits independently and uses floor locomotion
