Toddler Moves

Parent observes and tests late-toddler motor milestones: standing while moving, walking with hold, stair climbing with help, releasing a ball, gestural requesting, watching peers, and ring posting. Covers nine gross motor and social-motor milestones at 18-30mo.

What you'll need

Open space. One step or stair if possible. A soft ball. A ring-posting toy if available.

How it works

  1. 1~60s

Three quick movement checks. First: can your child stand in one spot for 5-10 seconds without holding anything? Second: while standing, does your child walk a few steps holding your hand — alternating feet? Third: toss a ball or toy across the room. Does your child go after it? Tell me all three.

Watch for: Child maintains a standing position independently

  2. 2~40s

If you have one step or stair: hold your child's hand and guide them up one step. Does your child lift one foot and step up? Then try coming down with you. Also: hold a ball out to your child and then ask them to give it back and throw it to you. Does your child release the ball deliberately with aim — not just drop it? If no stairs, note that and move on.

Watch for: Child walks up stairs with adult help, alternating feet

  3. 3~60s

Three final observations. First: in daily interaction, does your child use pointing or gestures to ask for things — not just words, but gestures to indicate what they wants? Second: if your child is near another child (sibling, neighbour) — does your child watch what the other child does? Try to do the same? Third: if you have ring-posting toy (rings on a pole), offer your child a ring with the pole horizontal — does your child try to post it? Tell me all three.

Watch for: Child uses gestures to indicate what they want
