What you'll need

Soft mat or blanket on the floor. Baby dressed lightly so movement is unimpeded. A small toy nearby.

How it works

  1. 1~60s

Place your child on their tummy. Does your child push up, lifting the upper body? Does they rock from side to side? Stretch forward to reach a toy placed slightly out of reach? Now place your child on their back and see if they rolls to their tummy. Does your child hold their feet with their hands? Tell me what you see.

Watch for: Baby pushes upper body upwards while lying face down

  2. 2~60s

Support your child in a sitting position. Does your child sit with your support? With just hands placed in front for balance? Sit completely alone — even for a moment? If you place a toy just out of reach on the floor, does your child lean forward and pick it up? Pull your child gently by the hands from lying to sitting — does they try to come up? Tell me each.

Watch for: Baby sits supported with help

  3. 3~40s

Three final tests. Offer your child a medium object — does your child grasp it with the whole palm (fingers wrapped, no pincer)? Does they hold two different objects — one in each hand — at the same time? Hold your child upright on a firm surface and gently support less. Does your child push down and bear weight on their legs? Then try to take a toy your child is holding — does your child resist? Tell me.

Watch for: Baby holds objects with palm without using thumb
