On the Move

Parent observes and tests active movement milestones — give-and-take play, early running, stooping to pick something up, and descending stairs with help. Covers four locomotion and social-motor milestones at 12-18mo. Three phases: give-and-take exchange, running and stopping, and stair descent.

What you'll need

Open floor space for the running phase. One step or a low stair for the stair phase (optional but ideal). A small ball or toy for give-and-take.

How it works

  1. 1~40s

Hold a toy and offer it to your child: 'Here you go — can you take it?' After your child takes it, hold out your hand and say: 'Now give it back to me.' Does your child give it back? Does they understand this is a back-and-forth game? Try 3 rounds. Tell me.

Watch for: Child participates in give-and-take object exchange

  2. 2~40s

Now two quick tests. First: call your child from across the room and encourage them to come fast — 'Run, run, run!' Does your child run (both feet off ground briefly) or just walk fast? May fall — that's normal. Then drop an object on the floor. Does your child bend or squat to pick it up and then stand back up? Tell me both.

Watch for: Child runs and stoops to recover object

  3. 3~30s

If you have stairs at home, or even one low step: hold your child's hand and guide them to descend — facing forward, one foot then the other, alternating. Does your child step down with guidance? Use both feet on each step? Or step-step-step alternating? How much help was needed? If no stairs available, skip this and tell me.

Watch for: Child descends stairs with adult's hand help, alternating feet
