What you'll need

Small toy to drop and hide. A cloth or cup. Flat floor or mat.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Hold a toy in front of your child and let it fall — drop it to the floor so your child sees it go. Does your child look DOWN to find it? Or just look at where it was in your hand? Try 2-3 times. Tell me what happens.

Watch for: Baby looks for dropped object on the ground

  2. 2~40s

Two hiding tests. First: while your child watches, cover a small toy with a cloth. Does your child pull the cloth off to get it? Second: place a toy under a cup and place the cup in front of your child after placing a block on top. Does your child lift the cup to get the toy under it — using the cup as a means to reveal the toy? Tell me both.

Watch for: Baby finds a toy hidden under a cloth

  3. 3~40s

Two final observations. Put your child on the floor with a toy just out of reach. Does your child roll toward the toy? Shuffle? Or crawl? Note the locomotion method used. Then offer two small objects at the same time — one to each hand. Does your child hold both simultaneously? Also, do the hands come together at midline, like your child is putting both hands together? Tell me.

Watch for: Baby rolls or shuffles to get around
