Move It!
Parent observes and tests running, wheeled toy navigation, and independent free play. Covers three gross motor and independence milestones at 18-30 months through three sequential observation phases: a running trial, wheeled toy use, and a timed independent play window.
Opens a guided voice session in TogetherTime.
What you'll need
Clear enough floor space for the child to run across the room safely. If a wheeled push-toy or ride-on is available, place it where it is visible. Prepare a small cluster of 3-5 familiar toys for the independent play turn.
How it works
- 1~30s
Let's see your child run! Crouch down at the other end of the room and call them: 'Run to me! Run as fast as you can!' Cheer and encourage. Watch closely: does your child actually run — both feet off the ground at the same time for even a moment — or is it a very fast walk with one foot always on the floor? Can they slow down or change direction before hitting a wall? Tell me what you see.
Watch for: Child runs more than a few steps showing momentary flight phase
- 2~60s
If you have a push-toy or ride-on, bring it out now and let your child use it. Place something low and soft — a cushion or soft block — about 2 metres ahead as a loose obstacle. Watch: does your child use their feet to propel the toy forward? Does they steer around or past the obstacle, even roughly? Does they aim toward a target — you, a wall, a spot? If you don't have a wheeled toy, just tell me and we'll skip to the next part.
Watch for: Child navigates a wheeled push or ride-on toy with some intentional steering
- 3~90s
Last one — set up a small play area with 3 to 5 familiar toys. Say to your child: 'I'm just going to be over here — you play.' Then move away, turn slightly, and stop engaging completely for about 90 seconds. No comments, no encouragement, no eye contact. Just watch quietly. Does your child keep playing on their own? For how long? Does they come to find you, or stay absorbed in play? Tell me what happened.
Watch for: Child sits or plays independently for at least a few minutes without adult engagement
