What you'll need

Normal home setting. A mirror if available. Think of a familiar caregiver and a less-familiar person (neighbour, distant relative) if possible to test stranger differentiation.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Call your child's name from across the room or just out of sight — don't wave or move, just call the name. Does your child turn toward you? Look for you? Also observe: when you talk to your child, does they look at your face and listen closely? Does they watch your mouth and eyes? Tell me.

Watch for: Baby responds to own name by turning or looking

  2. 2~60s

Four quick observations. First: stretch out your arms toward your child to be picked up. Does your child reach back with their arms toward you? Second: stop a game your child is enjoying and watch the reaction. Third: when a less familiar person approaches and talks to your child, does they react differently than with you? Fourth: does your child like to play face-to-face with you — smiling, vocalising, copying expressions? Tell me all four.

Watch for: Baby stretches arms to be carried

  3. 3~40s

Hold a mirror in front of your child and watch. Does your child look at the reflection? Smile at it? Reach toward the mirror or the reflection? Try to touch the face in the glass? Also: show your child a completely new toy or object they has never seen. Does your child lean toward it? Examine it closely? Does your child also watch what YOU do — look at you and then at what your hands are doing? Tell me.

Watch for: Baby enjoys looking at self in the mirror
