What you'll need

Optional: paper and pencil, a natural object, a photo or picture book.

How it works

  1. 1~90s

Watch your child move around the room or a nearby space. Ask them to run to the other side of the room, then hop on one foot, then jump up as high as they can. Do all three. Watch whether your child negotiates obstacles safely — chairs, table edges, doorways — without colliding. Note the quality of balance and coordination. Then for fine motor: ask your child to draw a picture, or if materials aren't handy, watch how they handles a cup, turns pages, or fastens clothing. Is the fine motor control deliberate and precise? Tell me both.

Watch for: Child negotiates space safely and demonstrates gross motor confidence

  2. 2~90s

Find or hold a natural object — a leaf, a stone, a plant, a seed. Show it to your child. Ask: 'What is this? Where did it come from? What do you think would happen if we watered it? Or if it got very cold?' Then ask about the seasons: 'What is the weather like right now? What was it like in winter? Why do leaves fall?' Watch for scientific curiosity — noticing, asking, predicting, explaining. Tell me what you observe.

Watch for: Child explores the natural world and makes observations and predictions

  3. 3~90s

Two final questions. For past and present: ask your child: 'What did we do yesterday?' Then: 'What did you used to do when you were a baby that you don't do now?' Then: 'What do you think you'll do when you're older?' Does your child understand past, present, and future? Can they sequence events in time? For people and communities: show a picture of people from a different background, or ask: 'Who are some different people in our community — what do they do? Do all families look the same? What is different about different people's celebrations or foods?' Does your child show awareness and curiosity about diverse people? Tell me both.

Watch for: Child understands past, present, and their own personal history
