What you'll need

Place a ball (any size) on the floor about 30cm in front of child. Make sure there's open space in one direction.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Ball is on the floor right in front of your child. Say: 'Can you kick the ball?' — and that's it. Don't show them how. Watch what happens — does they approach it, contact it, how does they kick? Tell me everything.

Watch for: Child makes forward contact with ball using foot

  2. 2~35s

Now add a target. Put a cushion or your feet about 1 metre away. Say: 'Can you kick it to [the cushion]?' Watch whether your child adjusts direction — does the kick go roughly toward the target, or just forward anywhere?

Watch for: Child directs kick toward named target

  3. 3~30s

Last one — say: 'Kick it as hard as you can!' Watch for force: does your child run up to it, swing their whole leg, or does it stay a light tap? This tells us about motor power and coordination.

Watch for: Child modulates force for a 'hard' kick
