Up I Go!

Child climbs onto a low object (chair seat, step, couch cushion on floor) without full adult assistance. Parent observes hand placement, strategy, and how much physical support is needed. Safety: parent spots throughout — this is not unsupervised climbing.

What you'll need

Place a low, stable surface in the middle of the room away from sharp corners. Stand directly behind child, arms ready to catch — but do not hold until needed.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Point to the surface and say: 'Can you climb up there? Show me how you do it!' Then wait — don't lift, don't point to where to put hands. Just spot. Watch everything: how does your child approach it? Where do the hands go? What does the body do? Tell me in detail.

Watch for: Child attempts to climb onto low surface independently

  2. 2~40s

Ask your child to climb down (support them for the descent — that's fine) and then try again. This time, step slightly further back — just fingertip range. Does your child manage with less proximity? Does confidence change?

Watch for: Quality of second climb attempt with reduced proximity support
