Container Play

Parent sets up container-filling and object-purpose play to observe intentional manipulation: putting objects in containers, starting/stopping toy movement, using everyday objects for their intended purpose, and cooperating with arm dressing. Covers four manipulation and self-care milestones at 9-16mo.

What you'll need

A cup or bowl and 5-8 large blocks. A ball that rolls (not too fast). A cup and spoon visible on the table. One shirt or long-sleeve top nearby for the dressing phase.

How it works

  1. 1~40s

Put the empty container in front of your child and scatter the blocks nearby. Don't demonstrate — just wait. Does your child pick up a block and put it in the container? Does they drop more in? Tell me what happens.

Watch for: Child places objects into a container

  2. 2~60s

Two quick tests. First: roll a ball slowly toward your child and say 'stop it!' Does your child reach out or block the ball? Then move it away and say 'push it!' Does your child send it back? Tell me. Then: put the cup and spoon on the table. Does your child pretend to drink from the cup, stir with the spoon, or use them for what they're for? Tell me both.

Watch for: Child starts and stops a toy's movement intentionally

  3. 3~20s

Time for the dressing test. Hold a shirt with the sleeve open and guide it toward your child's arm. Say: 'Can you push your arm in?' Don't push for them — hold the sleeve open and wait. Does your child push the arm through? Or resist? Or stay passive? Tell me.

Watch for: Child pushes arm through sleeve cooperatively
