What you'll need
Choose a recipe with fractional measurements. Pancakes, basic cookies, or muffins work well. Gather all ingredients, measuring cups (including 1/4, 1/3, 1/2, and 1 cup), and measuring spoons. Have the recipe written or printed where the child can read it. Clear a workspace where the child can measure and mix. The parent should let the child handle the measuring — the math lives in the hands.

Let's start cooking! Have your child read the first few ingredients with amounts. As they measures, watch carefully: does your child grab the right measuring cup on the first try? Can they identify which cup is which? Here's the real test: when the recipe says 'three-quarters of a cup,' what does your child do? Does they look for a three-quarter cup, or figure out that they needs to use the quarter cup three times, or fill the half cup and the quarter cup? That problem-solving reveals how deeply they understands what fractions mean. Let them measure two or three ingredients and tell me what you observe!

Here's where the real math begins! Tell your child: 'We're going to change the recipe. Let's make HALF the recipe — what does each measurement become?' Go through three or four key ingredients together. For example, if the recipe calls for one cup of flour, half is half a cup — easy. But what's half of three-quarters of a cup? What's half of one-third of a cup? Those are the interesting ones! Let your child work them out — with measuring cups in hand if needed. Watch whether they uses the cups to figure it out physically, calculates it mentally, or needs your help. After halving, try doubling one ingredient as a bonus. Tell me which calculations your child could do and which were stumpers!

While you're cooking, let's play a fraction equivalence game! Hold up two measuring cups and ask your child: 'How many of this cup fit inside that cup?' For example: how many quarter cups fit in a half cup? How many third cups fit in one cup? Here's the tricky one: how many quarter cups fit in a third cup? That last one is hard because they don't divide evenly — and THAT'S the interesting part. Does your child realize it doesn't come out even? Also, while you're mixing, ask: 'Which is more — two-thirds of a cup or three-quarters of a cup? How do you know?' Tell me how your child handles the equivalence questions!

As the cooking wraps up, let's reflect on the math. Ask your child three questions. First: 'What was the hardest fraction question today, and what made it hard?' Second: 'Where else in real life do you see fractions — not just in math class?' And third — this is the fun one: 'If you had to explain what a fraction IS to a five-year-old, what would you say?' That last question reveals whether your child truly understands the concept or has just been following procedures. Tell me the answers — and how the food turned out!
