Rhyme Time Detective — Find the Matching Sounds

A phonological awareness game where the agent says a word and the child finds or says rhyming words. The activity progresses from easy, familiar rhyme pairs to harder words, with the parent helping the child understand the concept of rhyming. The agent observes the child's ability to identify and produce rhymes, a critical pre-reading skill.

What you'll need

No materials needed. Make sure your child can hear clearly. It helps to be face-to-face so your child can see your mouth forming the sounds if needed.

How it works

  1. 1~25s

Alright, Detective your child! Let's start with an easy one. I'm going to say a word, and I want your child to tell me a word that rhymes with it — a word that sounds the same at the end. Ready? The word is... 'cat.' What rhymes with 'cat'?

Watch for: Child produces a word that rhymes with 'cat'

  2. 2~25s

Nice job on that first one! Let's try another. This time, I'll say two words and your child tells us: do they rhyme or not? Here we go — 'moon' and 'spoon.' Can you ask your child: do 'moon' and 'spoon' rhyme? Do they sound the same at the end?

Watch for: Child correctly identifies whether two words rhyme

  3. 3~30s

Okay, let's make it a bit harder now! The word is... 'tree.' your child, can you think of a word that rhymes with 'tree'?

Watch for: Child produces a rhyming word for a slightly more challenging target

  4. 4~35s

Last challenge, and this is the big one! I'm going to say a word and I want your child to come up with as many rhyming words as they can. You can count them together! Ready? The word is... 'day.' How many rhymes can your child find? Go!

Watch for: Child produces multiple rhyming words under a generative challenge
