What you'll need

Parent and baby face-to-face at close range. Baby should be alert, fed, and content. No toys or distractions needed.

How it works

  1. 1~20s

Start by just making eye contact and smiling at your child. Give them a moment of silence — sometimes babies will start talking if they have space. Does your child make any sounds on their own? Coos, gurgles, squeals, anything?

  2. 2~25s

Now here's the fun part — when your child makes a sound, copy it back! If they says 'aaa,' you say 'aaa!' right back. Then wait. See if your child responds to your copy. Tell me — does they seem to realize you're copying?

  3. 3~20s

Let's stretch a little. After your child makes a sound, copy it, then add a new consonant. If they says 'aaa,' try 'aaa... ba!' Does your child try to copy the new sound? Even just listening intently is great.

  4. 4

Last thing — how is your child feeling during this little chat? Smiling? Bouncing? Calm and focused? The emotional quality of these early conversations matters as much as the sounds themselves.
