How it works

  1. 1

Let's start by setting up our café together. Show your child how to spread the blanket or towel on the floor to make our café table. Then place the cups and spoons on it. Say, 'Welcome to our café! What should we name it?'

  2. 2

Now let's choose roles! You could be the chef, server, or customer. Ask your child, 'Who would you like to be today? The chef who cooks, the server who takes orders, or a customer visiting our café?'

  3. 3

Time for our first customer! If you have a soft toy or doll, that can be our customer. Otherwise, you can pretend. Ask your child, 'What would our customer like to order today? Let's make a special drink or snack for them!'

  4. 4

Now let's prepare the order! Use the cups, spoons, and any other items to 'make' what the customer ordered. Encourage your child to describe what they's doing: 'Tell me how you're making this special {item_ordered}!'

  5. 5

Time to serve! Have your child bring the order to the customer (toy or you). Encourage them to use café language: 'Here's your order! Enjoy your meal!' Then ask, 'What does our customer think of their {item_ordered}?'
