How it works

  1. 1

Let's start by showing your child the routine. Pick up one toy and say, 'This teddy goes in the blue basket—choo choo!' Then hand your child a different toy. Ask, 'Can you put this block in the red box?'

  2. 2

Now let's try with another toy. Hold up a stuffed animal and say, 'This puppy wants to go in the green basket. Can you help?' If your child succeeds, add a little challenge: 'Now, let's find a car and put it in the blue box.'

  3. 3

Now introduce a gentle rule. Say, 'Our clean-up train has a rule: we walk, not run, when carrying toys. Let's tiptoe like mice to put this car away!' Observe how your child responds to the added rule.

  4. 4

Time for your child to lead! Say, 'The clean-up train needs a conductor. Can you pick up a toy and tell me where it goes?' If your child hesitates, offer choices: 'Does the block go in the red box or the green basket?'
