How it works

First, let's set up our calm space. Place the cotton balls in the bowl and sit comfortably with your child. Say: 'These are our calm clouds. When we feel upset, we can breathe like a soft cloud.'

Now, hold a cotton ball in your palm. Say: 'Watch the calm cloud. When we breathe in slowly, the cloud stays still. When we breathe out slowly, we pretend to blow it gently.' Model a slow inhale and exhale.

Next, let's practice when feeling frustrated. Say: 'If we feel upset, we can hold our calm cloud and take three cloud breaths. Let's try together—breathe in, 1-2-3, breathe out, 1-2-3.'

Finally, let's talk about when to use this. Say: 'Where can we keep our calm clouds? Maybe near your bed or at the table. When might we need them?'
