How it works

  1. 1

Let's start by showing your child the items. Hold up one item, like an apple, and say clearly: '苹果 (píng guǒ) - apple.' Then ask: 'your child, can you say 苹果?'

  2. 2

Now let's practice a simple question. Show your child two different items, like a banana and bread. Ask: 'your child, 你要香蕉还是面包?(nǐ yào xiāng jiāo hái shì miàn bāo?) - Do you want banana or bread?' Encourage they to point and try to say one choice.

  3. 3

Now let's play customer and seller! You be the seller and your child be the customer. Hand your child the bag and say: '欢迎!(huān yíng!) - Welcome! 你要买什么?(nǐ yào mǎi shén me?) - What do you want to buy?' Encourage your child to ask for an item using '我要...' (wǒ yào...).

  4. 4

Let's practice polite words! After your child 'buys' something, say: '谢谢!(xiè xiè!) - Thank you!' Then prompt: 'your child, can you say 不客气?(bú kè qì?) - You're welcome!'
