What you'll need

Prepare your child's meal with 2-3 different textured foods (like mashed potatoes, soft peas, and yogurt). Have a child-sized spoon ready and a bib or washcloth nearby.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's start by handing your child their spoon. Say 'Here's your special spoon!' Watch how they hold it. Do they grab it with their whole hand or try to hold it like you do?

Watch for: Initial spoon grip and interest

  2. 2~30s

Now let's try scooping! Choose the easiest food to scoop, like mashed potatoes. Say 'Let's scoop the soft potatoes!' Watch their scooping motion. Do they dig in, swipe, or need help?

Watch for: Scooping motion and coordination

  3. 3~30s

Now let's explore textures! Point to a different food, like peas or yogurt. Say 'Feel this one — it's bumpy/smooth!' Watch how they interact. Do they touch, smell, or taste?

Watch for: Interaction with different food textures

  4. 4~30s

Let's try bringing food to mouth! Encourage them to bring their spoon (or fingers) to their mouth. Say 'Yummy to your tummy!' Watch the journey from bowl to mouth. Is it direct, messy, or hesitant?

Watch for: Bringing food to mouth with utensil
