How it works
- 1
First, let's introduce the game. Show your child the empty box and say, 'This is our mystery box! We're going to put things inside, and you'll guess how many are in there—just by feeling or shaking it. It's okay if your guess isn't perfect. Let's try!' Place 3 items inside, close the lid, and hand it to your child. Ask, 'How many items do you think are inside? Take a guess!'
- 2
Now, reveal the items and count them together. If your child's guess was off, say warmly, 'Look, there were 3! Your guess was different—that's how we learn. Let's try again!' Add or remove items to change the number. Hand the box back and ask, 'Now how many do you think are inside?'
- 3
This time, encourage experimentation. Say, 'Let's make it trickier! You put some items in the box—as many as you want—and I'll try to guess. Then we'll switch.' After a few rounds, ask, 'Was it more fun to guess or to hide the items? What did you notice about guessing?'
- 4
Wrap up by celebrating effort. Say, 'We guessed a lot today! Sometimes we were close, sometimes not—and that's okay. What was your favorite part? Was it more fun to be right or to try guessing?' Optionally, draw a happy face on paper together for each brave guess made.
