How it works

1. 1

   Place one item in the water, like the plastic bowl. Say, 'your child, look what happens when I put this in the water!'

   Hand your child a different item, like the wooden spoon. Encourage, 'What do you think will happen if you put this in?'

3. 3

   Ask an open-ended question like, 'Why do you think the bowl floats but the spoon doesn't?' or 'What happens if we pour water through the colander?'

4. 4

   Introduce a slight change, like adding a drop of food coloring or a floating toy. Say, 'Ooh, something new! What do you notice?'
