How it works

  1. 1

First, let's gather 5 to 10 small items from around the kitchen or living area—like spoons, cups, or toys. Place them on the counter or table. Then, write the numbers 1 through 5 on separate pieces of paper or sticky notes. Ask your child to count the items out loud with you.

  2. 2

Now, let's match the number cards to groups of items. Place the number '3' card on the table. Ask your child to take exactly 3 items from the pile and put them next to the card. Repeat with another number, like '2' or '4'.

  3. 3

Let's make it a challenge! Ask your child to create two groups: one with more items and one with fewer. For example, 'Can you make a group with more spoons than cups?' Encourage they to compare and explain.

  4. 4

Now let's solve a little problem. Say, 'We need 4 items total for our pretend picnic. We already have 2. How many more do we need?' Use the items to help your child figure it out.
