What you'll need

Outdoor space with accessible ground. Optional magnifying glass. Child dressed for outdoor exploration. Parent models gentle behaviour with creatures.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Start looking! Check under rocks, near plants, on leaves, in grass. Say 'Let's find some bugs!' When you or your child find one, crouch down together and look closely. you, does your child seem interested? Excited? Scared? Does they look closely or back away?

Watch for: Child shows interest and engagement when discovering a small creature.

  2. 2~25s

If your child wants to touch or pick up a bug, coach gentleness: 'We need to be very gentle — bugs are tiny and fragile.' Does your child use a gentle touch? Can they let a bug crawl on their hand? Or does they try to squish or grab?

Watch for: Child demonstrates gentle handling of or around small creatures.

  3. 3~25s

While observing, ask your child: 'What's the bug doing? Where do you think it lives? What does it eat?' Even imaginative answers show ecological thinking. Does your child make observations or ask questions about the creature?

Watch for: Child asks questions or makes observations about the creature's behaviour, habitat, or needs.
