What you'll need

Gather 2-3 kitchen items that make sounds when tapped (wooden spoon, pot, plastic container, metal bowl). Sit on the floor or at a table together. Have a familiar nursery rhyme in mind like Twinkle Twinkle or Old MacDonald.

How it works

  1. 1~45s

Perfect! Let's warm up those vocal cords. Start singing a song your child already knows — Twinkle Twinkle or whatever they loves — and tap along on your kitchen instruments. Just have fun with it! Tell me how your child joins in.

Watch for: Watch whether child sings along, hums, or taps rhythm during the familiar song

  2. 2~45s

Now here's where the silliness starts! Sing that same song again, but this time change one word to something funny. Like instead of 'Twinkle twinkle little star,' try 'Twinkle twinkle little... banana!' See if your child laughs and wants to pick the next silly word. What word does they suggest?

Watch for: Listen for whether child suggests their own replacement words or phrases

  3. 3~60s

Now let's go totally original! Pick something your child loves — maybe their favourite food or animal — and make up a short song about it together. It doesn't need to rhyme or sound perfect. Just sing something like 'I love pizza, pizza, pizza, yummy yummy in my tummy!' and bang along on your instruments. See if your child makes up their own line!

Watch for: Listen for any original melodic phrases or lyrics from the child

  4. 4~45s

Last challenge — the loud and quiet game! Sing your new song together, but this time try it super LOUD, then super quiet like a whisper, then fast, then slooooow. Use your kitchen instruments to match! Tell me how your child handles the changes.

Watch for: Notice how child adapts singing and playing to different dynamics and tempos
