How it works

  1. 1

Say to your child: 'Look! I have a special treasure box. Can you help me open it?' Wait and see how your child responds.

  2. 2

Open the box and take out one object, like the spoon. Hold it up and say: 'Wow, a spoon! Do you want it?' Wait for your child's request.

  3. 3

Put the spoon down and take out another object, like the ball. Hold it just out of reach and say: 'Oh, a ball! What should we do with it?' Wait to see if your child requests an action, like 'roll' or 'throw.'

  4. 4

After playing with the ball, point to the closed box and say: 'There's more treasure inside! Can you ask me to open it again?' Observe how your child requests.
