How it works

First, let's set the scene. Hold up the routine item (like the spoon or washcloth) and say excitedly, 'Look your child! It's time to help with [routine]. Our friend [toy's name] needs your help! Can you show they how we get ready?'

Now, give a simple, one-step helper task. Say, 'Can you help by putting the [item] in the [container] or giving it to [toy's name]?' Model the action if needed.

Connect the helper task to the routine. Say, 'Thank you for helping! Now we're ready for [routine]. Can you help [toy's name] get ready too? Let's walk to the [routine area] together.'

During the routine, reinforce participation. Say, 'You're such a great helper! While we [routine action], can you hold [toy's name] or help with one more small thing?' Keep it light and playful.
