How it works

  1. 1

First, let's explore textures! Place a piece of paper over one of your textured objects, like a coin or a leaf. Show your child how to rub the side of a crayon gently over the paper to reveal the hidden pattern underneath. Say: 'Wow, look what appears! Can you try rubbing a different object?'

  2. 2

Now let's notice the effects. Hold up two different rubbings. Ask your child: 'How are these patterns different? Does one look bumpy, scratchy, or smooth? What could we call this texture?'

  3. 3

Time to refine our art! Invite your child to choose a few favorite rubbings, cut or tear them into shapes, and arrange them on a background paper. Ask: 'How can we combine these to make a picture or design? Should we overlap them or leave space?'

  4. 4

Let's reflect! Once the collage is glued, ask your child: 'What do you like most about your texture art? How did the rubbings help you create it?'
