What you'll need
Quiet, dimly lit room. Baby alert and calm (not hungry or tired). Parent holds baby in a face-to-face position. No distractions, phones away.
How it works
- 1~30s
Just look into your child's eyes. Softly. No need to talk or make faces — just be present. Breathe slowly and let your face be calm and warm. you, watch what your child does with their gaze. Does they look back at you? For how long? Does they look away and then come back? Tell me about your child's eyes.
Watch for: Baby engages in mutual gaze with parent and regulates the interaction through looking and looking away.
- 2~25s
While you continue this quiet time, pay attention to your child's body. Is they relaxed? Tense? Fidgety? Notice their hands — are they open and relaxed or clenched? Notice their breathing — is it slow and steady or quick? you, also notice your own body. Are you relaxed? Your calm transfers to your child.
Watch for: Baby's body shows regulation during quiet, contemplative interaction — relaxed muscles, steady breathing, open hands.
- 3~25s
For our last observation, stay in this quiet space a little longer. Notice the emotional quality of this moment. Is there a feeling of warmth between you? Does your child seem content? Can you sense them matching your emotional state? you, also notice — when you soften your face, does your child's face soften? When you breathe out slowly, does anything shift in your child?
Watch for: Baby shows emotional attunement with parent during quiet mutual gaze — matching affect, responding to parent's emotional shifts.
