Gratitude Detectives — Find What Matters Most
Child and parent each find 5 things they're grateful for, then discuss why those things matter and what they reveal about values. Builds gratitude expression, reflective thinking, and values awareness through collaborative investigation.
Opens a guided voice session in TogetherTime.
What you'll need
Both parent and child spend 2 minutes finding 5 things they're grateful for. Can walk around the house looking for inspiration or sit and think. Parent should genuinely participate, not just observe.
How it works
- 1~45s
Take turns sharing! Let your child go first. Ask them to share all 5 things, one at a time, and after each one ask: 'Why that one?' Then you share yours. Watch what KIND of things your child chooses—are they material (toys, food), relational (people, pets), experiential (activities, moments), or abstract (feelings, ideas)? Tell me the full list and the 'why' behind each one!

Now put on your detective hats! Look at both your lists together and ask your child: 'Do any of ours match or connect? What do our lists tell us about what our family thinks is important?' This is values investigation—finding patterns in what matters to us. Then ask: 'What do you think their best friend would be grateful for? Would the list be the same or different?' Tell me what patterns your child spots and whether they can think about other perspectives!

Let's go deeper! Pick one item from your child's list and ask: 'If that thing could talk, what would it say back to you?' Then try: 'What did you have to do to have that thing in your life? Did it just appear, or did something have to happen?' This explores gratitude beyond just naming—understanding where good things come from. Tell me their responses!

Final question, and it's the one that turns gratitude into action! Ask your child: 'Of all the things you're grateful for, is there one where you could SHOW the person you appreciate them? What would you do?' And: 'Gratitude detectives look for clues every day. If you were going to find one thing to be grateful for before bed tonight, where would you look for it?' Tell me their plan!
