Sort It Out! — The Color and Shape Game

Parent and preschooler play a sorting game with everyday objects, organized by color, shape, or size. Agent guides parent to observe categorization thinking, flexibility in sorting rules, and vocabulary for describing groups.

What you'll need

10-12 varied objects with distinguishable colors, shapes, and sizes. 2-3 bowls or plates for sorting groups. Tabletop or floor space.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

Let's start with colors! Pick up a red object and put it in one bowl. Then pick up a blue one and put it in another bowl. Now say to your child: 'Can you put the red things here and the blue things there?' Point to the right bowls. Tell me how your child does!

  2. 2~30s

Now let's switch the rule! Mix everything back together and this time sort by shape — round things in one bowl, things with corners in another. Can you show your child one of each and explain the new rule? Then let them sort. Does your child switch from color thinking to shape thinking?

  3. 3~25s

One more — can your child sort by size? Say 'Let's put the big things here and the little things there.' This is the hardest one because size is relative. How does your child handle it?

  4. 4

While we've been sorting, has your child been talking about it? I'd love to know what words they used. Did your child name colors or shapes? Say things like 'this goes here' or 'that's a big one'?
