What you'll need

6 safe household objects of varied shape, texture, and size. Place within toddler's reach on floor or low table. Toddler seated comfortably.

How it works

  1. 1~30s

First, just let your child explore the pile for a minute. Don't direct anything yet — just watch. Does they pick things up one at a time? Examine them? Put them in their mouth? Bang them together? Tell me what you see.

  2. 2~20s

Now hold up the ball and say 'This one is round! It rolls!' and roll it. Then hold up a block and say 'This one has corners! It doesn't roll.' Does your child seem to notice the difference? Does they try to roll or stack either one?

  3. 3~20s

Pick up something smooth — like a spoon — and something soft — like the sock. Let your child feel both. Say 'Smooth!' and 'Soft!' Does your child seem to feel the difference? Does they react differently to the textures?

    Watch for: responds_to_texture_differences

  4. 4

Last thing — find the biggest and smallest objects in your pile. Hold them up and say 'Big! And little!' Does your child react to the size difference? Can they hold the big one with both hands and the little one with one?

    Watch for: shows_awareness_of_size
