Problem Solving Puzzler — How Would You Do It?
A voice-guided problem-solving activity where the parent presents real-world challenges to the child — like how to reach something high up or carry too many things at once. The agent guides the family through increasingly open-ended problems, observing the child's reasoning approach, willingness to try, and ability to explain their thinking.
Opens a guided voice session in TogetherTime.
What you'll need
No special materials required. Parent and child should be in a room with everyday objects around (kitchen or living room works well). Parent may want to pre-position a stuffed animal or toy on a high shelf for the first challenge.
How it works
- 1~35s
Okay, here's the first puzzle! Can you put a toy or stuffed animal up on a high shelf or counter — somewhere your child can see it but can't quite reach it? Then ask them: 'How could you get that down without a grown-up lifting you?' Let your child think and share their ideas. your child, I bet you've got some clever ideas — tell me what you'd do!
Watch for: Child generates solutions for reaching an out-of-reach object
- 2~35s
Here comes puzzle number two! Gather three things that are hard to carry all at once — maybe a ball, a book, and a cup. Put them on one side of the room. Now ask your child: 'How can you carry ALL three of these to the other side of the room in just ONE trip?' Let's see what they comes up with! Tell me what your child tries.
Watch for: Child devises a strategy for carrying multiple objects in one trip
- 3~40s
Last puzzle — and it's a fun one! Grab two books or boxes and place them a little apart on the table, like two cliffs with a gap between them. Then find a small toy figure or car. Ask your child: 'How can we make a bridge so this toy can get across?' your child can use ANYTHING in the room. your child, this one is a real challenge — what do you think you could use to build a bridge?
Watch for: Child identifies materials and constructs a functional bridge between two supports
