How it works

  1. 1

Let's start by showing your child how to hold the spoon. Say, 'Look, I'm holding my spoon like this!' and demonstrate a palmar grasp (fist grip). Then encourage your child to pick up their spoon.

  2. 2

Now let's practice scooping. Say, 'Let's dig into the food like we're finding treasure!' Guide your child to dip the spoon into the bowl.

  3. 3

Time to bring the spoon to their mouth! Say, 'Now let's take the food to your mouth—yum!' Encourage your child to lift the spoon toward their face.

  4. 4

Let's celebrate eating! If your child gets food in their mouth, cheer! If not, that's okay—say, 'Let's try again!' Encourage another scoop.
