How it works

  1. 1

First, sit with your child and place the favorite toy in front of them. Gently cover the toy with the blanket, leaving part of it visible. Say, 'Where's teddy? Oh, there they is!' Uncover it with a smile. Let's see how your child reacts.

  2. 2

Now, let's gently cover your child's own legs or hands with the blanket for just a moment. Say, 'Where are your child's toes? Peek-a-boo!' Uncover quickly with a smile. Observe how your child responds to being briefly 'hidden.'

  3. 3

Now, let's practice a gentle separation. Sit facing your child, then slowly stand up and take one step back while saying warmly, 'I'm just stepping back for a second!' Pause for 2-3 seconds, then immediately return with a big smile and say, 'I'm back!' Watch your child's response.

  4. 4

Let's combine the ideas. Hide the toy under the blanket, then say, 'I'm going to find it!' Take a few steps away, pretend to look somewhere else, then return and uncover the toy with flourish. 'Here it is!' Notice how your child handles your brief departure during the search.
