How it works

  1. 1

Let's start by showing your child your own face up close. Hold your child comfortably facing you, about 8-12 inches away. Smile warmly and say, 'Hi your child, it's me, you!' Watch how your child looks at your face.

  2. 2

Now let's introduce another familiar person. Show your child a photo of someone they sees often, like your partner, a grandparent, or a sibling. Hold it near your face and say, 'Look, your child, it's [Name]! Can you find [Name]?' Notice if your child looks between the photo and you.

  3. 3

Let's add a little movement. Hold the photo of the familiar person and slowly move it from one side to the other in front of your child. Say, 'Where did [Name] go? There they is!' Watch if your child tracks the photo with they eyes.

  4. 4

Now let's try a 'surprise' face. Show your child a photo of someone less familiar (like a distant relative or a friendly neighbor). Place it next to the familiar photo and say, 'Look, here's [Familiar Name] and here's [New Name].' Observe your child's reaction to each.
