How it works

  1. 1

First, let's just watch and listen. Get nice and close to your child, about 8 to 12 inches away, so they can see your face clearly. Stay quiet for a moment and just observe. What kind of sounds or mouth movements do you notice?

  2. 2

Now, let's try a 'sound mirror.' When your child makes any little sound—a coo, grunt, or sigh—imitate it back right away. Match the pitch and length if you can. Then, pause and smile to give they a chance to respond. What happens when you mirror their sound?

  3. 3

Let's add some playful variety. Make a few different slow, exaggerated vowel sounds: 'aaah,' 'eeeee,' 'ooooo.' Watch your child's face closely. Do you see them watching your mouth, moving their own lips, or trying to make a sound in response?

  4. 4

For our last turn, let's combine sounds with gentle movement. Hold your child securely or lay them down. As you make a soft, rising 'weee' sound, gently lift your hands or rock slightly. Then, on a falling 'wooo' sound, bring your hands down slowly. Does your child seem to enjoy this multisensory play?
